| At Fountain House we believe that, with the correct support, children with a variety of difficulties can flourish. If these children can be freed from suppression, invalidation and problems arising from low self-esteem they can learn to deal with their difficulties and utilize their often extraordinary creative abilities. Such children, however, require a high level of supervision within a structured program tailored to their particular needs. For this reason we keep our groups small and, when appropriate, give one-to-one tuition.
With the aim of keeping the child in mainstream schooling whenever possible, the intention is to nurture them in a safe and welcoming environment where they can receive the attention necessary for them to achieve their potential.
We offer small group lessons at a fairly intensive level to attack specific difficulties within the field of literacy and numeracy. Multisensory methods are used with a leaning to the sensory input strongest in the child. Thinking skills are developed in all sessions as is phonological awareness, fine motor control and the use of symbolic and conceptual imagery when appropriate.
We feel strongly that the children under our care should attend these specialist sessions instead of and not as well as their mainstream school lessons. We are always conscious that extra work can overload a child and when this happens systems shut down. Clearly, for a child who has processing difficulties, lessons after a hard school day are not productive.
Too often these children have self-esteem problems and it is only when they see success in their classroom that their self-image will grow. For this reason we attack the weaknesses intensively so that improvement can be seen quite quickly. Instead of soul destroying lessons year after year, our aim is to make a difference as quickly as possible and to set the child free to learn independently whenever possible.
Every child is considered comprehensively using neurodevelopmental screenings to find the blocks to learning and the profile obtained allows us to design a non-taxing therapeutic program specifically for that individual.
Each child also follows their own individualised learning program which is continuously monitored so that we can move at their speed and alter the program as necessary.
We strive to help each individual in various ways; to raise their academic skills as near to age and intellect appropriate levels as possible and to strengthen their underlying skills so leaving them far less vulnerable academically and emotionally. We believe that in this way the child can truly feel validated and reach their true potential.
We offer:
- In-house multisensory literacy and numeracy group and individual lessons
- Auditory and visual perceptual therapy at our centre or as home courses overseen by us as necessary
- Full teacher assessments, visual and sound perception assessments and neurodevelopmental screenings
- Thinking skills courses
- Individual typing lessons
All children with difficulties have different skills and deficits each requiring their own personal program. The journey may be a long one but all can grow with the right non-oppressive environment and correct support.
We take children through referrals from educational psychologists, language and other therapists, teachers, schools and current and past parents.
All are welcome at our Centre and initial consultations are free.

....I cannot believe that tomorrow is Tasha’s last day with you. I truly believe that if it was not for you, Tasha would not be at the stage that she is now, and with the tools for her to continue to grow!..you have given her a chance in life that I will remember always.
